Ik zit nog wat meer met plugins te spelen… een hele hoop die under-the-hood werken en waar jullie niks van merken, maar ook een paar leuke… Zoals een nieuwe geïntegreerde audio player:

Upgrade naar WordPress 2.2

Ik heb net even S.oS geupgrade naar WordPress 2.2 en tot mijn lichte irritatie is er iets verandert aan het widget systeem, waardoor zowel m’n sidebar als m’n shelf niet helemaal okee meer zijn. Ik ga nog uitzoeken hoe dat precies zit!

Google Analytics… Mint?

In de categorie ‘hoe verneuk je je Google Analytics stats het snelst’: Upgraden naar Ultimate Google Analytics plugin, maar vervolgens wel vergeten om je GA account nummer in te vullen. Ik vond het al zo vreemd dat ik geen traffic meer zag sinds maandag.

Ik overweeg het overigens om een licentie van Mint te kopen voor deze site, op basis van de positieve reviews die het programma krijgt. Het is vergelijkbaar met wat GA doet, maar dan wat gebruikersvriendelijker. En $30 ga ik ook niet dood aan.

Twitter

Ik zit al sinds redelijk ver aan het begin bij Twitter, toen het idee nog voornamelijk was dat je via telefoon je status kon updaten. Dat werkte natuurlijk niet in Nederland, dus ik ben er nooit echt aan begonnen. Het hele telefoon idee is tegenwoordig passé en er is net een plugin uitgekomen waardoor je Twitter feed een leuke status widget voor je sidebar wordt. Eens kijken of ik ‘m vaker ga gebruiken!

[Update] Juist, Twitt Twoo werkt te onstabiel voor woorden. Ik ben toch maar voor Twitter Tools gegaan.

Redesign zoveel

TrueBlue is geupdate naar 1.4 en het was toch tijd om maar weer eens wat te klussen aan de site. Daar ben ik vandaag mee bezig, dus het kan er allemaal wat raar uit zien.

Redesign in progress

I just had my last wisdom tooth taken out and I’m whacked out on Ibuprofen. Great time to do some redesigning (I want to try it on morphine next time). I’m upgrading to WordPress 2.1.2 and K2 0.95 RC1. This might make things look pretty ugly for a while, it should clear up pretty soon.

Redesign – again.

Much to my chagrin, Unsleepable hasn’t been updated in a while and it doesn’t seem likely it will support WordPress 2.1 in the near future. I guess that teaches me for using a non-standard K2 variant. That means there’s another site redesign in the works, this time based on regular old K2 again. It will probably coincide with my GuySie.nl redesign (which has been floating around my head for a month or two now).

And now that we’re mentioning changes, here’s another one:
Ik ga weer in het Nederlands schrijven.

Heb het nu 2 maanden in het Engels gedaan en hoewel het me prima bevalt is het puur een easy way out. Ik ben ooit begonnen met bloggen om betere copy te leren schrijven in de taal waarin ik waarschijnlijk later moet werken. In het Engels schrijven voelt zoveel natuurlijker aan, maar dat is natuurlijk bar slecht als ik in Nederland een marketeer wil worden. Dus ik moet mezelf pushen om meer en beter te schrijven, in het Nederlands.

Ik weet nog niet zeker hoe ik dat precies ga doen, of ik de site bilingual ga maken (ik weet ook niet wat de mogelijkheden van WordPress daarvoor zijn) of om de zoveel tijd een Engelse post doe op een voornamelijk Nederlandse blog, maar kijk niet te verrast op als de site er binnenkort weer anders uit ziet.

Don’t install Vista

For some odd reason, last week I decided to install Windows Vista. Stupid move.

I’ve never been on the anti-Microsoft bandwagon before, even when I was an electrical engineering and computer science student, since Windows was doing just fine what it was meant to do from Windows 2000 on. I was entirely satisfied with XP. I find Linux to be far too mess-with-to-keep-it-running and MacOSX was hardware-dependent so I couldn’t test it. I was convinced that upgrading to Vista would not be the terrible nightmare that the media made it out to be. I mean, it’s still based on XP code in there so it couldn’t be too bad.

I was wrong.

So far, and I’ve been at my internship most days so I haven’t even really been able to give it a proper stress-test, these are the things I hate:

1. NO stable drivers. There are way, way, way too many drivers that simply suck. My sound support is crap, I lost my TV-out on both my videocards, my older devices aren’t recognized, ARGH!
2. How is me authorizing every-single-thing I do exactly make things safer? No wait, I don’t even care, I’d argue that being less safe but less annoyed wins out in this case. Off it goes. See the Apple ad about this very subject.
3. Aero is nice to look at (though still not on MacOSX level), but there’s still software out there that brings Aero to a crashing halt, throwing the interface back to Basic. I don’t mind that. But what I do mind is that there’s a 1 in 5 chance that Aero completely screws up coming back and takes all Aero-related windows with it. In fact, that just happend as I’m writing this and I’m looking at a blank taskbar.
4. The stupid window flipping scrolling thing. That you’re supposed to replace alt-TAB with. That thing’s the most hilariously inefficient part of Vista yet.
5. General inefficiency CPU and RAM wise… my 1 gig of RAM is used 70% just with Windows on idle, CPU goes all over the place all the time. No idea what it’s doing.
6. Oh, and just one last pet peeve… the fucking screensaver pops up when I’m watching videos. I thought this was fixed back in ninety-fucking-nine. Off that goes too.

Urgh. I might just upgrade to XP if I have a few days left over.

WordPress 2.1

Crap. WordPress 2.1 is out. If I’d known it’d be out so soon I wouldn’t have built this entire site, knowing that this release would break every-fucking-thing. I’ll wait for an updated K2, followed by an updated Unsleepable to come out before I try to install it.
