Currently working as Lead of the Marketing department at the Open Home Foundation. This is the non-profit that owns and governs the open-source Home Assistant software, and other projects in the Open Home ecosystem. The Marketing department is responsible for connecting the foundation’s projects, such as Home Assistant and ESPHome, with the people who benefit from them most: users, contributors, and partners. As you can imagine, it’s an absolute dream job and I have no idea what I’ve done in previous lives to get this karmic reward.
This job has genuinely been a case of making my hobby my job because I’ve spent years automating my home with Home Assistant and all the systems you can connect to it. I like gadgets, and now my whole home is a very big gadget. Some of it is actual quality-of-life improving, some of it is just-because-I-can geekery, but it’s a lot of fun to be on the cutting edge of this field now.
One particular rabbithole I’m into now is epaper displays. Epaper is an amazing technology, and I’m very excited to see different ways of it being used in the home. From art displays, to smart home dashboards, to simple passive information displays, my home is currently filled to the brim with these gadgets.
Creatively, my main passion project right now is getting back into film photography. From shooting decades-old cameras to developing my own negatives, it’s amazing how calming it is to put all your efforts into an old-school analog format when your work life revolves around being digital all day.
This now page is inspired by NowNowNow, the project to add an alternative for about and contact pages:
Most websites have a link that says “about”. It goes to a page that tells you something about the background of this person or business. For short, people just call it an “about page”.
Most websites have a link that says “contact”. It goes to a page that tells you how to contact this person or business. For short, people just call it a “contact page”.
So a website with a link that says “now” goes to a page that tells you what this person is focused on at this point in their life. For short, we call it a “now page”.
